Hi – I do a lot of work for Premier photographers in Hamilton near Glasgow. The photo shown here was taken by Carrie at Premier Photography and hair and make up was styled by myself. Mainly the work I do with Premier is for their Pout Boudoir fashion shoots which feature real life women and girls who have elected to have a glamorous portrait session showing off all their best assets in a sexy or natural way.

For make up, I am often asked by these clients to portray themselves looking more glamorous than they would usually look, yet not so different that it doesn’t look like themselves.. Here’s how I do it…

A perfectly smooth base is very important – for me as an artist its my canvas. I use Lily Lolo mineral foundation which is a light mineral based powder which gives a flawless natural finish. I apply with large soft Powder brush in crcular movements all over the face. There is no need to continue over the neck if you select a colour and tone that is a natural match to your own skin. Next comes blemish cover – again I choose Lily Lolo and apply in a dabbing motion with a small eyeshadow brush over any areas of imperfection such as spots and dark eye circles. Often its an idea to go one shade lighter under the eyes – this gives a wonderful ‘lifting & brightening’ effect. i then revisit with the powder brush and blend away until I am happy with there are no obvious powder lines or shade differences.

Eyes next – Build up your colour starting with the lightest shade of the palette you have selected. Apply from the centre of the eyelid and sweep over in circular motions till you have a good coverage. Next apply a medium shade to the eye socket and along the upper eyeline using a medium firm shadow brush – one with a shaped straight line will give you good definition. Be careful to sweep away any loose colour that falls beneath the eye with a larger flat end brush. what you’re looking to do here is create depth to the eye so that you are highlighting the lid and brow and creating a darker colour in socket. This looks demure and sexy if you keep the shades close together, and looks more dramatic and sultry if you significantly contrast the shades. Again, blend away with a clean brush to ensure that you are happy with the contrast. Any brand of shadow will give you a decent initial coverage – choose carefully by brand depending on how long your look needs to be in place as cheaper brands can sometimes fade away faster. Cheat this by using a good base prior to foundation such as Clarins Beauty Flash Balm.

Eyeliner next, and I favour the Urban Decay ‘Ink For Eyes’ range. Its a cream liner which you apply with a brush for high definition and then you use the dabber end of the brush to give a smokier look. Go heavy with liner for a dramatic look and stay lighter for a more natural finish. With cream liner you don’t have to worry about going too heavy then having to remove – you can lighten it up by applying a lighter shadow over it – the cream liner will make the powder shadow stick to it and you can control the tone and colour this way.

Choose your mascara carefully, and apply carefully. Dont go too heavy on the initial sweep. Its better to build up with coats and stop when you are happy rather than applying too heavy first time and getting into a clumpy mess.

Blusher should be applied using a specifically designed blusher brush. Apply to the apple of your cheeks (find these by smiling enthusiastically!) in circular motion then blending upwards on your cheekbones.. Highbeam – which wil lighten and make your skin glow- can be applied using the same brush just above your brow and cheek bones. Sweep it along your jaw bones too for that Kylie look!

Lipstick can be tricky – don’t be afraid to experiment with colour. As a rule you should go for lighter shades of you have darker eyes, and vice versa. However, depending on your desired end result this doesnt have to be the case. if you want sultry you can easily go for a high gloss reddy brown, or deep pink along with smokey sexy eyes. Create a fuller pout very simply by applying lipstick with a bush just outside your natural lip line. Fill the middle section of your cupids bow with a lippy a few shades lighter and this will highlight your lips. Bourjois and Rimmell do excellent lipsticks with real staying power. To help your lipstick stay put longer, blot with a tissue and then re-apply a second coat.

Voila – a perfectly made up face!

The photo shown here was taken by Premier Photography at their beautiful studios in Hamilton – make up and hair styling was by Sharon at Cherry Beauty (thats me!). Find them at http://www.premierphotography.co.uk/ and their Pout site is http://www.poutphotography.co.uk/.

If you have any questions or would be interested in booking a make up lesson with me then please contact me on 07894 161 031. Make up lessons are fun and interactive – we both start with a clean face and apply our make up together, with me showing you how and where to place each product to maximise your natural beauty.

Thanks,

Something happened today that’s prompted me to write a guide on how to make sure you get a top quality spray tan. I’ll explain what happened first….

I have a night out tomorrow night and wanted an all over tan including my back – I find this difficult to do myself to the standard I would like, so I contacted someone who I had seen recommended on a social networking site I use. When I contacted her I explained that I was a beauty therapist myself and would she have any problems spraying me with my own preferred solution – Nouvatan 10% – as I’m not keen on the one she is currently using. She said that would be fine. Anyway – the girl – who was actually really lovely – very nice & friendly – turned up today and unfortunately things went a wee bit pear shaped. Before I explain further I would like to say that I think that the circumstances that follow are due to the way training was given to the girl who came to me and nothing to do with her ability or her willingness to provide a top class service.

Firstly, she asked if I would like any hair removal done as she had her kit with her – she probably didn’t know it but actually this is a tanning cardinal sin – you just cannot have any waxing threading, shaving or tweezing done on same day as tan as it opens your pores / lifts top layer of skin off and exposes you to streaking and blotching. I had said she could use my tent and equipment and showed her my gun etc… That was all grand, and I put on my sticky feet to protect my soles from browning and stepped in the tent. I expected her to spray at close proximity in vertical lines from right to left – this is the best and most accurate way to tan so you can see where the product has been applied. Unfortunately that didn’t happen. All I could feel was a ‘general’ spray covering my whole body, and she was standing quite far away from the tent – the solution mist kind of going everywhere. I thought it best to stop her and try to talk through how to apply following the way I have been trained (and how I practice) but by that time the solution had got to places it shouldn’t have and I’m afraid to say that I’m sadly the owner of a pair of streaky looking hands and arms. I’ve tried to fix the problem in my own way, but only time will tell later this evening after I shower what the result is going to be like. Am wee bit worried.

So – what should happen if you want a perfect tan and tanning experience? Well – here’s an indication…..

Before booking, talk to your tan therapist about the product they use and what training they have had / how long they have been operating.

Talk to them about your skin tone, how well you tan in natural sunlight and what you are wanting the tan for. These things will help the therapist recommend the correct DHA % for you and ascertain whether or not they have something that will suit you. Natural blondes, redheads and those who burn in the sun r dont really tan naturally shold think carefully before going any higher than 10% DHA – that’s how people end up being ‘tangoed’ and obtain that orangey look – its because your skin cant cope with the active ingredients at that level.

Ask to be given a written guideline of what to expect from your tanning experience and pre-tan hygene / body prep.

On the day of your tan, make sure that before they begin to spray you, that they have issued you with sticky feet for your soles, and provided neutral moisturiser for any areas of particularly dry skin you have.

Get them to check the tan spray colour on dry kitchen towel / couch roll before they spray, so they make sure that the correct consistency is coming from the gun.

You should be sprayed at fairly close proximity and the spray should be directional, up and down, and def not a general random spray – If they do that then you can bet you are not going to be even!

Ask them to shield your hands from spray with the buffing mitt as they spray your arms. This should prevent any hand streaking.

If there is any running or ‘wetness’ on your skin then this should be blotted not rubbed in by therapist using a buffing mitt.

The best way to spray your hands is to hold your hands in a claw shape and gently open and close your fist – this helps prevent the white knuckle experience but doesn’t allow so much solution in so you get brown lines on your knuckles either. Spray should again be direction but moving from left to right and moving away slightly from your hand as the gun gets closer to your fingertips.

Watch out for the therapist missing bits. If you feel you have not been sprayed on any part of you then ask them about it – don’t be afraid to question!

Make sure that when you have been tanned that the therapist gives you an aftercare guide or at least an instruction on what to do. As a general rule, in summary, you should not shower or expose yourself to water for about 8 hours (unless its a solution like VaniT Velocity which can be washed off after an hour), you should not wear a bra if you can manage that (helps avoid stripey shoulders), don’t wear socks and do wear loose clothing. Another popular mistake is to touch your skin afterwards – you’ll end up with brown hands!

Anyway – I hope that this helps anyone thinking of getting a spray tan done and please feel free to leave any comments if you think I have missed anything or even tell me about your own experiences.

Cheers, happy tanning!

Hi I’ve been doing a little work on increasing my nail art portfolio. To achieve these looks I prep client nails, then apply either natural, white or clear tips. next comes a UV gel overlay (Young Nails Synergy Gel – fabulous quality!) and a high gloss top coat to seal the enhancement. After that the design choice is agree between myself and client and off we go on our little arty journey. I’ve been using The Edge Nail art cream which goes on thicker than a polish. It has to be applied with a metal dotting tool as its impossible to remove from a brush after use. A clear top coat is required to seal the design and …..Voila! Fabulous nails!

The cost for the leopard nails would be in the region of £40 – £45.

Nail Extensions with a UV gel overlay are still only £25.

You may expect UV gel nail extensions to last up to 3 weeks (with careful management) before infills are required. I recommend a visit to me every 2 weeks to keep them looking fresh and sparkly new!

Cherry Beauty got together with Access in Glasgow to raise funds for the very worthwhile charity Children In Need on Friday 20th November.

Sharon arrived at the Access offices on Ingram Street Glasgow at 10am and set up a mini Beauty Shop in one of their meeting rooms. Clients began arriving at 10:15 requesting treatments including Indian Head Massage, Mini Manicures, Pedicures and Nail File n’ Polishes. Donations were given in exchange for these treatments and together we raised a grand total of £188!

The guys at Access were absolutely brilliant – we had heaps of fun and chat the whole day long, and lots of ladies departed our little Beauty Shop feeling relaxed, refreshed and with suitably glamourous nails – polished with colours from our gorgeous OPI Espana range.

We’d like to offer a huge note of thanks to Access for all their kind efforts and enthusiasm on the day! Cheers guys!

Have been thinking about adding Pregnancy ‘bump’ painting to the list of our services, and today I had a little practice on one of my clients – Kathleen. I arrived at her house at 10am and set up my Grimas Face Paints and brushes. We had already discussed a design and I prepared a little sketch for her to review before we started. Her lovely little 3 year old daughter Rachel was fascinated by all the exciting paints, and full of amazement at what the ‘lady’ (that’s me) was painting on her mummy’s tummy!

First I applied a base of rosy pink and white encircling Kathleen’s bump. Next, I painted ‘32 Weeks’ which is her term status, and two tiny little feet on the middle of her tummy. Kathleen knows that she is having a little girl so we kept the colours light and girly, mainly using pinks, purples, white and reds.

After applying some teeny tiny flowers around the feet painting, I finished by applying some irridescent glitter to selected areas for a lovely sparkly finish.

Kathleen was delighted with the end painting, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience saying that she found it to be relaxing and fun. She is so happy to have a photograph of her beautiful bump painting to keep and show her new little daughter when she arrives.

Thank you Kathleen – you and Rachel were both absolute stars!
